School Health Services

A student’s health is an important key to academic success. The Harrison County Health Department has paired with schools in Harrison County in an effort to maintain the health of students, preschool through 12th grade. The Harrison County School Health Program provides the knowledge and expertise of a Registered Nurse to assist area schools with school health activities.

The school health nurse, provided by HCHD, assists schools with maintenance of health records, development of individualized healthcare plans, educational material on health and safety, a system for medication administration, and health screenings with referrals as needed.

Staff at Bethany Eye Center assists the nurse with vision screenings. Local dentists Dr. McCall and Dr. Humphrey perform regular dental screenings. Fluoride varnish is applied to students at each school by the nurse, other HCHD employees, and volunteers. Hearing screenings are conducted at each school. Head lice checks are also regularly completed at all Harrison County schools. The goal of School Health Services provided by Harrison County Health Department is to keep all students healthy, active and motivated so they have a better chance at academic success.
